It has been a while since I issued a challenge, so let me remind you of how these work. I set a writing challenge, and once you complete it, please let me know. You can then earn print-out badges, which you can stick in a notebook. I am still hoping to find a viable way to print these and send physical copies to Woofenberrys, but so far, I haven’t seen an affordable option. With that said, the third challenge will allow you to earn your ‘friendship badge’. Let’s get into this.
We all know the popularity of love poems hasn’t fizzled out. It remains one of the most popular topics for poetry; however, one thing we do not see enough of is poetry about platonic love. Our friends are our stars when the skies get dark. They’re the unbreakable boat in relentless sea. Despite all of this, I manoeuvre through the world without seeing many poems about friendship. It is time we changed that! Sabrina Benaim talks a lot about platonic love poems, and in her second book, ‘I love you, call me back,’ she has a few poems that are exactly this. Take these as inspiration and write a poem about a platonic relationship. The poem below was written about Sabrina's mother, but it could also serve as an excellent format for friendship poetry.
In the same book, Sabrina does write some friendship poems, such as:
This is a little poem I wrote about my friend, Corey. It is simply titled
Corey Lee Robbins
Works harder than
a shovel at a graveyard.
Will sleep when he’s dead.
Dies not nearly enough.
Wishes the resurrection
was running late.
Unnails himself
form his slumber
and gets the doing done.
Seasonal zombie
Full-time homie
Part-time scientist.
Still trying to invent more time.
Wipes the sleep from his eyes
and asks the day
to be kind.
Pick a friend or write about all of them, and let me know when you've done so. You will then receive your ‘friendship badge’. I look forward to seeing what you do with this. If you have questions, please message me here or on Instagram.
Keep kind and stay true, Woofenberrys x
