The Distance
My grandmother is diagnosed with dementia
eleven thousand miles from the place
I am struggling to call home
and suddenly, I develop a fear of flying.
I picture every mile traveled as a memory she loses -
her mind slowly letting go of the lyrics of my laughter -
the closer I get to home the more stranger I become.
I picture dementia as a wild beast
we have convinced ourselves is tame
but you know what they say
about the tiger who allows humans into its cage -
it could get hungry at any moment -
become beckoned to some feral calling
